This professional development was created by New York City social studies teachers in conjunction with DOE Department of Social Studies staff and technology integration specialists. This professional development is designed to enable a teacher who has access to a projector and classroom set of internet-ready computers to enhance teaching and learning using 21st Century tools. This professional development is aligned to the National Educational Technology standards, The Social Studies standards and the National Staff Development Council standards, and can be used in conjunction with any social studies program.

Celebrating Student Work in Social Studies with Virtual Tours

Elementary Sample Unit
(Consists of 8, 45-60 minute sessions)

In Celebrating Student Work in Social Studies, participants learn to bring students on a virtual tour to understand the important geographical and cultural features of communities throughout the world. Upon completion of this class, participants will be able to select appropriate internet sites for students, teach students to effectively research about communities around the world and present their findings in an engaging digital format.

Enrich a Study of Egypt - Then and Now with Technology

Grade 6 Sample Unit
(Consists of 8, 45-60 minute sessions)

Discover how to enrich instruction when studying Egypt using online tools such as Rubistar for assessment, Trackstar and Inspiration for organizing research and writing, and creating interactive brochures with music, narration and images using PowerPoint. This professional development is designed to enable a teacher who has access to a projector and classroom set of internet-ready computers to enhance teaching and learning using 21st Century tools.

Enrich the Study of American Revolution with Digital Documentaries

Grade 7 Sample Unit
(Consists of 8, 45-60 minute sessions)

Discover how to enrich social studies instruction with digital documentaries using the American Revolution as a sample unit of study. In this class participants investigate key individuals from that period in history and present their contributions in a digital documentary requiring students to use the research process, storyboard, include narration, and credit their work appropriately. Enrich Social Studies Exit Projects with Technology

Grade 8 Sample Unit
(Consists of 8, 45-60 minute sessions)

Social Studies teachers discover 21st Century tools that will enhance the creation of social studies exit projects as they explore the process involved in selecting a topic, developing a research question, and identifying materials and resources used in designing social studies exit projects. This is accomplished by incorporating the use of such technology tools as Inspiration, TrackStar, blogs, and RSS to foster social studies skills, and the development of critical thinking skills and language arts skills. These tools will support students and teachers in the development of strategies to use technology for inquiry and information management. The sessions will culminate in the creation of a technology-infused Social Studies exit project.
